How KGS and the Zhenghua grassroots community joined forces to put a free TakeBag in the hands of every resident and what it means for Singapore's e-waste future.
We all have that one drawer. Or maybe a shoebox. Filled with old phones, chargers that don't belong to anything anymore, a tablet with a cracked screen you kept meaning to fix. Sound familiar?
The truth is, most of us want to recycle our old electronics. We just never quite get around to it. Part of the problem? Finding somewhere to actually drop them off. So this time, we thought, what if we made that part as easy as possible?
That's exactly what happened in Zhenghua. Working together with the Zhenghua Residents' Committee and Community Club, we put a free TakeBag directly into the hands of 13,000 households across the estate. No website to visit, no form to fill in. Just a knock on the door and a bag, ready to go.
13,000 TakeBags. Handed out across Zhenghua. Making it easier to do the right thing.
TakeBag isn't a doorstep collection service. Here's how it actually works, and why that makes it better.
Once you've filled your TakeBag with old electronics, you scan the QR code inside to book a slot at your nearest PICK! locker. There are approximately 1,100 PICK! locker locations across Singapore, which means there's one within about 5 minutes of virtually any HDB home.
No more lugging devices across town hunting for an e-waste bin. No more leaving things in a general waste bin and hoping for the best. Just find your nearest PICK! locker, drop your bag in, and you're done. The whole thing takes under 2 minutes.
This matters more than it might seem. E-waste that ends up in regular trash bins doesn't just sit there harmlessly. It breaks down and leaches toxic materials into the environment. Lead, mercury, cadmium. Things that don't belong in a landfill. TakeBag gives every resident a genuinely easy alternative.
This was very much a community effort. The Zhenghua RC and CC volunteers were the ones on the ground, going block by block, floor by floor, making sure every home got a bag. KGS supplied the TakeBags, and the volunteers did the rest, and honestly, they were brilliant at it.
There's something that just works about this approach. When it's your neighbour at the door, someone who lives in the same estate, people actually stop and listen. It doesn't feel like a campaign. It feels like a conversation.
Fill the bag at home, scan the QR code to book a PICK! locker slot at your convenience
Every item goes through certified data destruction and responsible recycling at KGS's facility in Tuas
Singapore produces around 60,000 tonnes of e-waste a year, and as Vulcan Post reported, only about 5.5% of that gets properly recycled. A big part of the problem is that disposing of e-waste responsibly has historically been inconvenient. TakeBag is built specifically to fix that.
TakeBag is listed on the NEA's official e-waste recycling page as a recognised programme for Singapore residents. If you're looking for a convenient and trusted way to recycle, Recyclopedia.sg also lists TakeBag as one of the best options available.
With 1,100 PICK! lockers across Singapore, there's no longer a good reason for e-waste to end up in the bin.
We think so. The Zhenghua initiative showed that when you put a TakeBag in someone's hands and there's a PICK! locker five minutes away, people actually use it. We've even been featured on Channel 8 for the TakeBag programme, and interest from other estates has been growing ever since.
As a NEA-recognised e-waste recycler, KGS is committed to making this kind of community recycling the norm across Singapore, not just a one-off in one estate.
If you're part of an RC, CC, or any grassroots group and you'd like to bring TakeBag to your neighbourhood, reach out to us at takebag@kgs.com.sg. We'd love to make it happen.
And if you're a Zhenghua resident who got a bag, go find it, fill it up, and walk it to your nearest PICK! locker. Your old devices deserve better than a trash bin. Learn more at takebag.kgs.com.sg.
