#howmanykgs Campaign: Turning E-Waste Recycling Into a Community Movement

#howmanykgs Campaign: Turning E-Waste Recycling Into a Community Movement

In just three months, thousands of Singaporeans came together with one simple question:
How many kilograms of e-waste can we recycle together?

The answer surprised even us.

Through the #howmanykgs campaign, the TakeBag community collectively recycled 4,836kg of e-waste — proving that when recycling is made convenient, people are willing to take action.

4,836kg of E-Waste — What Does That Mean?

To put 4,836kg into perspective:

  • That’s roughly the weight of 3 average cars
  • Equivalent to over 4,000 laptops
  • Or tens of thousands of cables, chargers, phones, and small electronics diverted from landfills

Every kilogram represents items that would otherwise sit forgotten in drawers, storerooms, or be discarded incorrectly.

Thousands Took Part — And Made It Fun

What made #howmanykgs special wasn’t just the weight — it was the people.

  • Thousands of households participated
  • Over 100,000 views across social platforms
  • 50+ influencers shared their TakeBag experience in 2025
  • Families, individuals, and communities competed, tracked weight, and celebrated progress together.

By turning recycling into a challenge, #howmanykgs transformed a normally overlooked task into something engaging, visible, and rewarding. Even the winner of the campaign mentioned on how this is convenient and fun too!

Why People Loved TakeBag

A recurring theme from participants was convenience.

Many shared that TakeBag made recycling:

  • Easy to start — just place e-waste into the bag
  • Flexible — no need to rush or travel far
  • Stress-free — store items over time and drop off when ready

For many first-time recyclers, TakeBag removed the biggest barrier: not knowing where or how to recycle e-waste properly.

Powered by Pick! Lockers

A key part of the campaign’s success was the strong support from Pick! lockers.

By allowing TakeBag drop-offs at accessible locker locations, Pick! made it possible for residents to recycle:

  • Near their homes
  • On their own schedule
  • Without needing special arrangements

This partnership played an important role in making e-waste recycling more inclusive and accessible across Singapore.

More Than Recycling — A Shift in Habits

Beyond the numbers, #howmanykgs helped spark conversations about:

  • Responsible e-waste disposal
  • Data security when recycling electronics
  • Sustainability as a shared responsibility

Many participants told us that after starting with TakeBag, they became more conscious about what they store, discard, and recycle.

What’s Next in 2026

#howmanykgs was just the beginning.

In 2026, TakeBag and KGS plan to:

  • Expand community recycling challenges
  • Introduce new engagement mechanics
  • Work with more partners and neighbourhoods
  • Make e-waste recycling even more convenient and rewarding

Because when recycling is simple, people show up — and the impact adds up.
