Spring Cleaning Goes Green: E-Waste Recycling Surges Ahead of Lunar New Year

We were recently featured on 8 World News, where we shared how Singaporeans are embracing e-waste recycling as part of their Lunar New Year spring cleaning. Here is a closer look at what was covered.

Bins Filling Up Faster Than Usual

As 8 World News reported, the surge in e-waste recycling was evident across the island ahead of Lunar New Year. An e-waste recycling bin at the base of an industrial building in Sembawang was completely filled during the festive period, with staff having to increase collection frequency just to keep up with demand.

It was a clear sign that more residents were choosing to declutter responsibly ahead of the festive season. Spring cleaning is a deeply rooted tradition, and it is encouraging to see more Singaporeans making a genuine effort to recycle rather than just throw things away.

More residents are taking the opportunity to declutter responsibly. The bins are filling up faster than usual, and that is a good thing.

TakeBag Orders Spike Before the Festivities

Ahead of Lunar New Year, KGS mailed out over 500 TakeBags to residents across Singapore, allowing them to fill their bags with e-waste at home and drop them off at a nearby PICK! locker. No trips to a dedicated recycling centre required.

By the end of the Lunar New Year period, more than 2,000 kg of e-waste had been collected through TakeBag alone, including tablets, smartphones, power banks, and charging cables — exactly the kind of devices that tend to get replaced during a new year refresh.

Three Reasons Residents Are Recycling More

KGS Director Andrew Tay shared three reasons that are making it easier and more appealing for residents to recycle their e-waste responsibly.

  • Convenience — the TakeBag process is designed to fit around a normal day, with over 1,100 PICK! locker locations across Singapore, most within 5 minutes of any HDB home
  • Data security — KGS provides certified data destruction for all devices collected, giving residents confidence that their personal information will not be compromised
  • Gamification — through initiatives like the #PressReset Challenge, recycling is made more engaging and rewarding, with residents having the chance to win prizes for participating

Together, these three elements address the most common reasons people hesitate to recycle their old electronics: not knowing where to go, worrying about their data, and not feeling motivated enough to start.

Awareness Is Growing, But Education Still Matters

Industry players broadly agree that public awareness around recycling has improved. More Singaporeans are making the effort, and the numbers reflect that. At the same time, contamination in e-waste bins remains an ongoing challenge. Items that do not belong in e-waste collection points continue to be deposited alongside the right materials, adding to processing complexity.

Continued public education is key. Knowing that recycling is important is one thing. Knowing exactly what goes where, and why it matters, is what turns awareness into action done correctly.

Looking Ahead: Hari Raya on the Horizon

The Lunar New Year season may be over, but the momentum is far from slowing down. With Hari Raya around the corner, another wave of spring cleaning activity is expected across Singapore, and with it, another opportunity for residents to give their old electronics a responsible send-off.

If you have been meaning to clear out that drawer of old devices, there is no better time. TakeBag is listed on the NEA's official e-waste recycling page and has been recognised as one of the most accessible recycling options for Singapore residents, also featured on Channel 8 and in Lianhe Zaobao.
