We’re delighted to share a remarkable milestone with all of you – the Grand Opening of our new KGS Vertical Recycling Battery Plant. This momentous event was graced by the presence of our Guest of Honour, Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, who officiated the inauguration of our cutting-edge battery recycling facility on Tuesday.
In her speech, Dr. Khor underscored the significance of our initiative, proclaiming, “KGS will increase Singapore’s battery recycling capacity by 30%, reaching 11,000 tonnes per year.” She emphasized the importance of this expansion in the face of the “growing volume of EV batteries… and lithium-ion batteries from ICT equipment, driven by wider digitalization.”
This boost in battery recycling capacity is not just about meeting escalating demands. Dr. Khor made it clear that it aligns closely with Singapore’s environmental objectives. “Battery and e-waste recycling is integral to Singapore’s target of reducing landfill waste by 30% by 2030,” she highlighted.
In anticipation of the impending surge in battery recycling needs due to the growing adoption of electric vehicles, KGS is poised to venture into stage two of our recycling initiative, code-named BREVE. This phase will elevate recycling to a new level, extending beyond battery recycling to the precise extraction of valuable materials.
This strategic move aligns seamlessly with our vision of a circular economy, where every resource is utilised to its maximum potential, leaving no room for waste. Beyond contributing to industry sustainability, this step also paves the way for fresh opportunities in innovation, research, and collaboration.
As we embark on this journey, we commit to playing a leading role in responsible resource management and reducing our environmental footprint. Our stage two initiatives encompass the creation of a well-integrated supply chain network, encompassing collection points, recycling centers, and partnerships with battery manufacturers and retailers. Such a network will ensure a consistent and adequate supply of battery scraps, further reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
Additionally, we will forge strategic alliances with key players in related industries, including electric vehicle manufacturers, gigafactories, and tech firms, all of whom have a vested interest in recycling batteries. These partnerships will not only help maintain a steady supply but also foster collaborative efforts to drive innovation in the recycling sector.
This grand opening represents not just the culmination of our efforts but also the commencement of a new chapter in recycling. Our mission to combat electronic waste and contribute to a sustainable future remains steadfast. KGS is dedicated to our mission to be the answer to the e-waste question and we welcome you to join us on this exciting journey.
Together, we can create a cleaner, more sustainable world, and continue to build towards A Sustainable Tomorrow for generations to come.
