For a child doing homework, a student picking up a new skill or a young adult applying for their first job, a laptop is often the starting point. Without one, even simple tasks become harder than they need to be.
On 4 October, KGS donated 16 refurbished laptops as part of a laptop giving session with the Tiong Bahru-Tanjong Pagar division, with each laptop going to a different recipient or family.
KGS donated 16 refurbished laptops for the session, held with the Tiong Bahru-Tanjong Pagar division to put them into the hands of families in the community. Each laptop went to a different recipient, with the group ranging from young children to young adults.
For many of the families, it meant a device of their own for the first time. For us, it was a chance to see the end of a laptop's journey that usually happens behind the scenes.
Singapore is one of the most digitally connected countries in the world, yet not every household has a working laptop at home. A phone can cover a lot, but it is not always the right tool for writing a school assignment, attending online lessons or building skills for work.
Giving a laptop to a family helps close that gap. For children, it means a proper place to learn. For young adults, it opens the door to training, applications and new opportunities. It also gives every member of the household a little more room to explore and have fun with digitisation, whether that is creating, researching or simply getting comfortable with technology.
Every one of these 16 laptops had a first life before it reached its new owner. Refurbishing gives a working laptop a second one, keeping useful devices in circulation for longer rather than letting them sit unused or enter the waste stream early.
That is the idea behind much of what we do at KGS. Through our IT asset disposal and refurbishment services and our e-waste recycling, we help organisations across Singapore handle their old equipment responsibly. For businesses concerned about what happens to the information on retired devices, our data destruction services are part of the same responsible process. Giving refurbished laptops to families who need them is another way to put that approach to work.
As a Singapore-founded company, we believe the work we do should benefit the community that supports us. Donating laptops for the 4 October session with the Tiong Bahru-Tanjong Pagar division was a reminder of why. A laptop that might have been retired from an office is now a tool for a student, a first step for a young adult or a shared device for a family.
Thank you to adviser Foo Cexiang and the Tiong Bahru-Tanjong Pagar division for working with us on this session, and to all 16 recipients and their families. We hope the laptops bring many hours of learning, and a little fun along the way.
