E-scooters (a type of personal mobility device, or PMD) has gained tremendous popularity in recent years in Singapore and it is not hard to see why. They are light, portable and relatively inexpensive making them the perfect choice for first and last mile travels. They are also particularly popular with the food delivery riders.
However, during the initial years of being unregulated, they cause a few problems. First were the rider and pedestrian interaction problems. The high number of injuries were reported in 2019 that resulted from PMD accidents and 1 in 6 being severe injuries. The next problem is the PMD itself. In 2019 we see a record high number of PMD related fires and a few of them were fatal.
These have resulted in the footpath ban and the ban on uncertified PMDs. Statistically, it shows that the footpath ban has reduced the number of PMD accident-related injuries. The ban on uncertified PMDs states that from 1 July 2020, only UL2272 motorised PMDs are allowed on cycling paths. Those who were previously registered but non-UL2272 will also be automatically deregistered.
Chill, you are not breaking the law as long as you don’t ride it. However, non-UL2272 PMDs pose a deadly fire hazard for you and your family. It is strongly encouraged to dispose them
properly.
You can contact one of the NEA-approved e-waste recyclers to collect the PMD from you or you can drop it off at their locations. Fees may apply for collection and recycling services.
Don’t worry. Not everything also must pay. From now till 1 July 2021, you can catch the PMD collection program when the KGS guys are around your neighbourhood and pass on your PMDs to them for FREE. If you prefer an at-your-doorstep kind of premium collection service, KGS is also at your disposal (pun intended) for a fee (we need to eat too.)
All the PMDs collected will be dismantled, sorted and sent for further recycling processes. We at KGS seek to be a good steward of our resources. We are ISO 14001 certified and a member of the Singapore Waste Management & Recycling Association.
As we work together with our clients to solve the global E-waste problem, assets will be recycled appropriately to reduce any negative impact that can potentially affect the environment. By doing so, we are protecting and caring for our environment. Therefore, companies can be assured that we adhere to the requirements by setting up an effective environmental management system. For PMD, other e-waste or secured data disposal enquiries, please feel free to contact us at enquiry@kgs.com.sg
This FREE PMD recycling collection program is brought to you by KGS Pte Ltd and strongly supported by the National Environment Agency (NEA)
