Where to recycle or donate your old electronics in Singapore

Where to recycle or donate your old electronics in Singapore

Got old electronics gathering dust? You have two options. If the device still works, donate it. If it is old, broken, or holds your data, recycle it free with the KGS TakeBag, which wipes your data for you.

One rule either way: never put electronics in a normal rubbish bin.

An e-waste bin or the TakeBag is the right home instead.

Your options at a glance

A working laptop or phone is worth far more to someone who needs it than as scrap.

If yours still works, Engineering Good refurbishes donated laptops for students and low-income families.

You can also drop a working laptop into a KGS TakeBag. Usable machines are screened for donation before anything is recycled.

Giving back is part of how KGS operates.

We have donated refurbished laptops to Adviser Yeo Wan Ling and the Punggol community, helping residents get online for school and work.

We have done the same for families at Masjid Al-Iman and for foreign workers learning digital skills.

One thing first: wipe the device yourself. Donation channels do not certify data destruction.

Can't wipe it? Recycle it instead, so the drive is properly destroyed.

Recycle from home with the free KGS TakeBag

For an old laptop, phone or a few gadgets, you do not need a service contract. TakeBag is free.

How TakeBag works

  • Order your free TakeBag and fill it at home with old laptops, phones, tablets, cables and small electronics.
  • Drop the sealed, barcode-tracked bag at any of 1,100+ Pick! lockers islandwide. It opens only with a PIN sent to your phone.
  • KGS recycles everything at its NEA-licensed facility in Tuas.

Got an old laptop? Skip the donation hunt and just bag it. Order a free TakeBag.

A note on limits: TakeBag is for households, not businesses.

It takes small items, so laptops and tablets fit. Desktop towers and monitors may not.

Where to recycle batteries

Never put batteries in a general or blue recycling bin. Damaged lithium cells are a fire risk.

For loose household batteries and bulbs, use an ALBA 3-in-1 e-waste bin.

For a phone or power bank you are retiring, a KGS TakeBag takes the whole device at once.

Swollen or damaged batteries should go straight to KGS, not into a bag.

Other ways to recycle e-waste in Singapore

Public e-waste bins

The national e-waste scheme has 1,000+ collection points in malls, supermarkets and community clubs.

A laptop, phone or router drops straight in.

Find one on NEA's recycle.gov.sg bin map or the KGS bin finder.

Retailer take-back

Buying a replacement? Retailers must take back your old equivalent device free on delivery.

Wipe your data before you drop it off

A public bin or a store take-back does not erase your data.

A quick delete or factory reset is not enough, and files can be recovered with free tools.

So take a few steps first:

  • Back up anything you want to keep.
  • Sign out of your accounts: Apple ID, Google, Microsoft and banking apps.
  • Securely erase the drive. A reformat is not enough for a modern SSD.

Rather not deal with this? TakeBag destroys the data for you, so there is nothing to wipe.

Got a business clear-out instead?

Retiring office computers is different. Company drives need certified destruction with documented proof.

KGS provides certified data destruction and IT asset disposition for a full office or data-centre exit. Get a quote.

Why not the normal rubbish bin?

Old electronics contain hazardous materials like lead and mercury that pollute a landfill.

The metals inside, such as gold, copper and aluminium, are lost when they are not recovered.

The bottom line

Old electronics in Singapore have two good homes.

If it still works, donate it through Engineering Good, or let TakeBag pass it on.

If it does not, recycle it free with the KGS TakeBag.

Either way, it stays out of the landfill, and your information stays safe.

Ready to clear that drawer? Order a free TakeBag and give your old devices a clean, secure send-off.
